Hello... Meet Lois Bugg Shadrick - Progressive Educator
Hi all! I'm joining the group late as my other course was canceled. My name is Lois Bugg Shadrick and this is my third course towards my TOUT certificate. I've been doing corporate training for over 15 years. I'm also a licensed Nail Technology Instructor where I had student ranging in ages 15 to 65. I took a distance learning course at NIU where we all met together in Second Life. My avatar was blue and purple and had wings. I love to fly in Second Life! While I haven't taught an online course before, I look forward to adapting some of my current workshops for online use. I did spend 5 quarters mentoring and coaching a group in a professional development class located in New Delhi, India. We used Skype. The determining factor on whether I enjoy a course has little to do with it form of delivery; relevance, interaction and connection make all the difference for me. Learners take on a greater portion of responsibility in an online course to ensure they are getting the info and help they need.
My favorite teachers encouraged me and pushed me to do better and believe in my capabilities. They told me so, they told others, They were patient and never tired of me asking questions. I wanted to know how and why things worked (I still do). In order to teach an online course I will need to be on top of staying connected to learners. I want to reach a larger audience with my material and I travel between Downers Grove and Overland Park, Kansas where my husband works. I would like to be able to work from anywhere.
My favorite quote is...
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he's always doing both. ”James A. Michener―
I love it because striving for mastery means I never have to work another day in my life! I can just keep playing. I was in an alternative certification program last year but it didn't pan out. Now I'm looking to refocus and redouble my efforts. This is my last career. I plan for teaching to be my legacy.
Math and Science are fun for me. I want to help girls get excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). In a former life I was a telecommunications engineers, I also programmed for NASA.
