Alternative Assessment
To also teach the skills most people will need in the work world (teamwork), I would incorporate a group project as part of the assessments of unit 5 - Best Practices.
Assignment: After reading and watching the unit material, groups of 3 or 4 students are to take an existing face to face lesson plan and enhance it with best practices in creating engaging and relevant classes for today's online learners. Changes need to be identified and which best practice informed that creation choice. Group members will be evaluated by the other group members and themselves for contribution and team work. Group members will also be evaluated on their lesson plan enhancements. The group work rubric would look something like this. An "A" would contain 9 or 10 of the best practices as outlined by J. V. Boettcher, Ph.D.. B=8 and 7=C. Each student would have to give feedback to at least 2 other's group's project. Each student will fill out the evaluation form for all the other team members and themselves. Everyone in the group will get the same enhancement grade. The teamwork grade will be an average of results from group members. The lesson plans could be posted via Google Docs and reviewed via the "comment" feature. At the end of the day, learners will be able to document lesson plan enhancements for 21st century online learners. As a group project I would let the group pick the best way to communicate their understanding of the best practices in online learning. They may come up with a spoken word piece or song. They may interview one of the foremost authorities in the field of online learning. The product rubric I attached is an example of the types of attributes that can be evaluated in the group project product.
